The Chincoteague Ponies run wild on Assateague, a barrier island off the coast of northern Virginia. They have been there since colonial times. The island of Chincoteague is another barrier island that lies between the mainland and Assateague. Chincoteague is a small charming town where people live and where there are hotels, restaurants and stores. Assateague, on the other hand is a national park with beautiful beaches, many species of birds and the wild ponies.

Wild Stallion

One day, on Assateague Island Virginia, I saw some of the Chincoteague ponies in the wild.  I photographed this stallion with his herd of mares. He was aggressively keeping them near him as there was another herd of horses nearby.
