There are so many interesting Woodpeckers. The most challenging one is the Pileated Woodpecker. When I find and photograph one of them, it’s is a real treat because they are so elusive and secretive. They are the largest and the noisiest of the woodpeckers. There are other woodpeckers that are much easier to find and photograph.
Red-headed Woodpeckers are also hard to find. Nevertheless, I have found them in the northeast as well as in the southeast. Likewise, I have been able to photograph Northern Flickers and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. I have found them in New York and Virginia.
I have also photographed Downy Woodpeckers, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. They are the most common type of woodpeckers. They can be found almost everywhere where there are trees.
I photographed the Gila Woodpeckers in Arizona. The Gila Woodpeckers nest in cactus plants.
