Pileated Woodpeckers are primarily insect eaters and are rarely seen at bird feeders. However, my friends and neighbors Mike and Carol McCarty taught me how to attract them. Fill the feeder with peanuts, raisins, walnuts and almonds. There is also “suet” that you can buy that contains these ingredients. These birds usually avoid people and are hard to photograph. But I was able to take over 200 photos while this woodpecker hung around their feeder posing for me. Here are a few of the photos I took.
